Merry Christmas!

What’s your favorite Christmas movie quote?

I love three in particular quotes from family favorite movies the one from Charlie Brown when Linus quotes the gospel of Luke:

Charlie Brown: Isn’t there anyone, who knows what Christmas is all about?!

Linus: Sure Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about. Lights, please?

And there were in the same country shepherds, abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them! And they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, “Fear not! For, behold, I bring you tidings o great joy, which shall be to all my people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ, the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the Heavenly Host praising God, and saying, “Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth peace, and good will toward men.

That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.

The second is from the Grinch:
“Pooh-pooh to the Whos!” he was grinchily humming.
“They’re finding out now that no Christmas is coming!

They’re just waking up! I know just what they’ll do!
Their mouths will hang open a minute or two
Then the Whos down in Whoville will all cry boo-hoo!

That’s a noise,” grinned the Grinch, “that I simply must hear!”

He paused, and the Grinch put a hand to his ear.

And he did hear a sound rising over the snow.
It started in low, then it started to grow.

Fahoo forays, dahoo dorays
Welcome Christmas! Come this way
Fahoo forays, dahoo dorays
Welcome Christmas, Christmas Day

Welcome, welcome, fahoo ramus
Welcome, welcome, dahoo damus
Christmas Day is in our grasp
So long as we have hands to clasp

But this sound wasn’t sad!
Why, this sound sounded glad!

Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small,
Was singing without any presents at all!

He hadn’t stopped Christmas from coming! It came!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!

And the Grinch, with his grinch feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling. “How could it be so?

It came without ribbons! It came without tags!
It came without packages, boxes, or bags!”

He puzzled and puzzled till his puzzler was sore.

Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before.

Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store.
Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more!

The third is from Elf:
Buddy the elf says:
I planned out our whole day. First, we’ll make snow angels for two hours, then we’ll go ice skating, then we’ll eat a whole roll of Toll House cookie dough as fast as we can, and then we’ll snuggle.

It is probably obvious to you why I like the first two, but Elf… why?

Over the years I have developed a pattern. I tend to watch movies, hear songs, see an item in the store, or something and tend to look for how God is connecting with me through what I am experiencing. It can get annoying for my kids, especially when I explain how you can find a God-moment in a box of Cookie Crisp cereal, so I understand how I can go overboard for some people.

If you’ve seen Elf, you know how hard Buddy works to just love his long lost family. He goes to extraordinary lengths to find them and connect with them and love them, which all seems weird to them (and us) because he is from a different place that they don’t think exists. He is persistent and continues to try even after repeated rejection and ridicule. God loves us and works on us even more so. So much so that He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, Emmanuel.

I love the quote from Elf because it expresses to me the Good News that God gave us life and Christ, so we can experience all the fun and splendor of life that He has planned out for us AND that if we give in to His love and His plans, however different or weird it may seem, as different as it might be, we find God snuggling up with us… we find hope, peace, joy, and love.

Whether you are worshipping with us online, at Switlik tonight, or at another church with family, may God bless you! Merry Christmas!

Peace,
Pastor Joe
